#1 THE FATHER OF MODERN PROGRAMING LANGUAGES

Dennis Ritchie – creator of the C programming language

Dennis Ritchie was a brilliant computer scientist mainly known for being the creator of the C programming language in 1971. Today, C coding is still one of the main tools in various fields such as embedded systems, operation systems or application. It is sometimes considered as the mother of all computer languages as we can find its influences in various modern programs. Dennis Ritchie is also famous for having co-created the original version of the Unix operating system with Ken Thompson.

#2 THE COMPUTEUR SCIENTIST ++

Bjarne Stroustrup - C++ creator

Bjarne Stroustrup started developing a new programming language named “C with classes” in 1979. Based on that work, he officially releases the first version of C++ 6 years later. Bjarne also wrote a complete book: The C++ Programming Language, which has been used as the official documentation for over 12 years. He received several awards for his contribution to the world of programing. Today, C++ is even considered as the most commonly used computer language.

#3 THE “HOBBY” PROGRAMMING PROJECT

Guido van Rossum -  Python creator

Guido van Rossum is a Dutch programmer, graduated in mathematics and computer sciences who invented Python. In December 1989, Guido was looking for a “hobby” programming project to pass time, so he created the basis of a new scripting language. He chose to name it Python as a tibute to the Monty Python's Flying Circus. The first official releases was made in 1991. Since 2003, Python is ranked in the top 10 programming languages by the TIOBE programming community.

#4 THE MAN WITH THE PENGUIN

Linus Torvalds - Linux kernel creator

Linus Torvalds is the creator of the Linux kernel. This half American half Finish Software Engineer released the Linux prototype in 1991. The first official version was launch 3 years after and it quickly became the heart of a wide family of free operating systems well known by developers. Because it is a part of platforms such as Chrome OS or Android for smartphones, Linux is the most used operating system in the world.

#5 THE COFFEE DRINKER

James Gosling – Java Founder & lead designer

James Gosling is a Canadian computer scientist known for being the creator of Java. His programming language has been released for the first time in 1995 with a simple promise: "Write Once, Run Anywhere". The Java project started 4 years earlier. It was designed for television, but it was to advanced for the digital cable used back in those days. The name “Java” refers to the coffee produced on the Indonesian’s Island of Java.
